George Orwell: literary snub
I’ve just been distracted by what’s being billed as the literary snub of the 20th century in today’s Sunday Times. It’s emerged that T. S. Eliot (he was a director of Faber & Faber at the time) rejected Orwell’s Animal Farm largely on the grounds of its portrayal of the pigs – more intelligent than the other animals and perhaps best placed to run the farm, had they been a little more public-spirited, that is.
It’s a fascinating story, not to mention one that just goes to show again how writing – even the best writing – doesn’t always find its way into the hands of a sympathetic publisher straight off, for all sorts of reasons. Lesson duly noted.
All best, Claire
