We all know how hard it can be to get published, so why not come along to the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook masterclass on submitting your manuscript?
This is a new two-part evening masterclass, focusing on the all-important covering letter and synopsis, run by the Editor of the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook, Jo Herbert, and Editorial Consultant Cressida Downing.

1. Course Outline
Week One: The Covering Letter
Talk from Jo Herbert and Cressida Downing – “Getting to grips with the submission process”, followed by advice on the submission process.
Workshop sessions featuring real-life sample covering letters and ‘Tweet your plot’ (summing up your novel in just one sentence).
Email your own covering letter in advance of the workshop for a personal private critique during the evening (letters to be emailed by Mon 28 June 2010).
Week Two: The Synopsis
Group workshop session analysing what works (and what doesn’t) in a synopsis.
Talk from Jo Herbert and Cressida Downing – “The Key Rules of Synopsis Writing”.
Q&A session covering all aspects of the submission process.
Note: Tea, coffee and biscuits provided. As these are evening workshops, feel free to bring your own snacks and sandwiches, to keep your energy up!

2. Tutor profiles
Jo Herbert has 13 years’ experience of the publishing industry. She has worked for three mainstream publishers in various editorial roles, most recently at A&C Black for the past seven years as Editor of the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook and the Children’s Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook.
She has written articles for Publishing News and runs writers’ workshops at UK literary festivals on the subject of getting published. She lives in London but is originally from Wales.
Editorial Consultant Cressida Downing has 16 years’ experience of the publishing industry and works as a professional reader for literary agents, book publishers and literary scouts. She sifts through submissions and identifies those with potential, and also makes editorial suggestions on how a manuscript can be improved, including advice on making it more commercial.

Dates: 6-9 pm, Wednesday 7th July and Wednesday 14th July 2010

Places: numbers are strictly limited, and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis
Cost: £150 per person (£130 for students).
