Jo Herbert (Editor, Writers' & Artists' Yearbook)

About me

I've been the editor of the Writers' & Artists' Yearbook since August 2002.

Long before that, I was born and raised in Wales, ending up in London in 1992 where I went to university (UCL) to study the History of Art. After graduating and discovering my BA wasn't sufficient to become an overnight successful restorer of oil paintings for the National Gallery, I looked elsewhere for a job, landing one as an editorial assistant in a small independent publishing house.

Since then, I've managed to hold down several editorial jobs at several publishing houses but now seem to have found my niche editing the Yearbook and helping aspiring authors to navigate their way around the publishing industry. I run workshops at various UK literary festivals on the subject of getting published and have written articles for publishing journals.

I live in Muswell Hill and commute into Soho most days. My favourite books include The Magus by John Fowles, The Stars' Tennis Balls by Stephen Fry, My Uncle Oswald by Roald Dahl and Tolkien's Gown by Rick Gekoski. I have a small collection of first editions (four signed) and wish I had the salary to buy more.
