Join us for an intimate lunch in the beautiful Georgian surroundings of Bloomsbury, London.

Are you writing a book for publication but unsure of how to find an agent? This intimate half-day event with four literary agents will give you insider knowledge on how to submit your manuscript to an agent, what they’re looking for and how to grab their attention. With a networking lunch and a chance for a one-to-one with the agent of your choice, you’ll receive direct  feedback on how best to hook your agent. 

Held in the historic literary surroundings of Bloomsbury at Bloomsbury Publishing, home to authors including Margaret Atwood and J.K. Rowling, this is your chance to get noticed.

Schedule

9.30-10.00 Morning refreshments and a chance to meet fellow members of the group you will be attending the morning sessions with.

10.00-10.40 A how-to session on knowing when your novel is ready, finding the right agent and what to include in a submission package.

10.45-11.25 Advice on how to pitch your novel (a short exercise where you can talk about your own work is included in this section).

11.30-12.30 Agents discuss what appeals to them in a submission, with real examples and case studies from both successful and unsuccessful submissions.

12.30-1.00 Both groups will come together for an open networking session with refreshments and lunch

1.00-2.30 You will have a 10-minute one-to-one session (the last session will begin at 2.30) with one of the agents and an opportunity to try out the pitch for your book, ask questions and receive feedback.

Agent Profiles

Thérèse Coen - Hardman Swainson Literary Agency 

Thérèse Coen is an agent at the Hardman and Swainson Literary Agency. Before that she worked at Bloomsbury Publishing, and Ed Victor. Alongside handling all the agency's translation rights, she is building a fiction and non-fiction list for both children and adult titles. She's interested in and looking for books across all genres; books with a strong hook, original concepts, captivating worlds and kick-ass protagonists.

Catherine Cho - Curtis Brown

Catherine Cho is an Associate Agent at Curtis Brown Ltd. She joined Curtis Brown in 2015 and is building her list in fiction and non-fiction. Originally from the US, her background is in law and public affairs. She lived in Hong Kong for several years and worked in the lobbying world in Washington DC before joining Folio Literary Management in New York. 

In terms of her list, she is looking for literary and reading group fiction. She particularly enjoys speculative fiction, magical realism, and science fiction and fantasy. In terms of non-fiction, she is looking for narrative memoir and science writing. Some of her favourite authors are Margaret Atwood, Chimamanda Adichie, Karen Russell, Elizabeth Strout, and Robin Hobb.

Milly Reilly - Jo Unwin Literary Agency (JULA)

Milly Reilly has been working with Jo Unwin for the last two years, assisting on her list of authors, and is now building her own list of fiction and non-fiction writers. Milly is looking for character-driven stories that delve deep into internal lives and the ways that people reveal themselves in friendships, families, and romantic relationships. She is drawn to writing that deals with darkness and complexity but is not without hope; writing that’s playful and poetic with characters that stay with her long after she finishes reading. On the non-fiction side, Milly is open to a very broad range: memoir and narrative non-fiction, books on psychology, human behaviour, illness and medicine, and political non-fiction that looks at gender, sexuality or race. Some examples of books she particularly admires are Half of A Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, When I Hit You by Meena Kandasamy and Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight for Sex Workers’ Rights by Juno Mac and Molly Smith.

Jonathan Ruppin - The Ruppin Agency

Jonathan Ruppin has worked in the UK book trade for 23 years, including 13 years at London's most famous bookshop, Foyles. He founded The Ruppin Agency in 2017 – handling literary and commercial fiction and serious non-fiction – with the aim of promoting writers from underrepresented communities. He has worked for publishers and literary agencies, founded a book club for English PEN, sat on the editorial committee of New Books in German, interviewed hundreds of authors in print and on stage and judged numerous literary awards including the Costa Novel Award, the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize and Desmond Elliott Award.

Event details

The event will be held at Bloomsbury Publishing, 50 Bedford Square, London WC1B 3DP. Doors will open at 9.30am, with workshops starting at 10am prompt.

Feedback

The half day session was excellent . I went into it thinking I am 75% of the way to my goal of getting something published. After the session I realised that I am really maybe only 50% of the way to that, but that is okay as all of the speakers were pragmatic, yet friendly and enthusiastic about the writing process. I came out thinking that it was money well spent as it will allow me to avoid a few of the pitfalls of the process.
