You write to scare and/or shock your readers, and weave an eerie atmosphere into your narrative. Mary Shelley, Daphne Du Maurier and Bram Stoker have all produced classic works of gothic fiction, while authors such as Stephen King and Dean Koontz are popular writers of contemporary horror.
