Back into Character

Hi all. I'm literally 5 or 6 pages off finishing my ms Fourteen in Sixty Nine and I've hit a real problem. I haven't picked it up for such a long while and I'm finding it really difficult to drop back into her personality. I had all her quirks and attitude, I became the girl when I was writing it previously, but now I'm struggling to become the character again. I've read from page one to see if I can pick it up, but no luck. Can anyone please give me some idea of how to step back into her character again. Thankyou.

Hi, Elsie.

Malorie Blackman writes a one or two page synopsis for each of her characters before she starts writing. You could try that.

I forget where I read it, but a director of a play admonished an actor during a rehearsal for not acting the part. The actor went away to study his character again. But this time he soaked himself in the part. By that I mean the entire background of the person. His social standing, political views, education, family, friends, lifetime of experiences, good and bad which shaped the person.

At the next rehearsal he played the part to the full. Read the dialogue as the person from that type of background and personal experiences would.

You have to get into the heads of your characters and be them when they are on stage.

I hope that helps.

Good luck.
