Bad editorial services, need legal advice

Hi, I used an editorial service for an assessment and basically have been ripped off and left with a report that is unfit for purpose, suggesting, along with other evidence, that the editor in question didn't have the capacity to do the job. I've tried complaining but they're trying to brush me off. Trading standards accepted I had a case and suggested the small claims court, but stated that since I aim eventually to publish, I am a small business. Does anyone know where I can go for legal advice on which laws apply? I have no money, so I need any free advice I can find.

After their contemptuous response to my complaint, I now feel strongly that these people should not be allowed to prey on and hurt unsuspecting writers.

Thanks to Dor and Jeff. I've given notice of going to court, but they're still just dismissing me as petulant and mistaken. However, they've sent an avalanche of e-mails effectively telling me I haven't a chance, so they're rattled.

I've just realised that since the report is bought and paid for, I can do with it as I like, including share it online.

I run a small clinic, I'm definitely a business, and have used the Small Claims Court before. No idea why Trading Standards said that. But telling someone I intend to use the small claims court within ten days (giving them a date to comply by) usually has the desired effect. You can now submit to the small claims court online - may well be worth paying the very small fee to start the case, to show you mean business, if they don't respond. If Trading Standards say you have a case, I'd go for it. And the best of luck!

ps: Citizen's Advice Bureau, yes.

The Citizens' Advice Bureau should be able to steer you right.

I would also get in touch with Victoria Strauss of Writer Beware who runs a blog alerting writers to scams, incompetents and other important issues. She treats all information as confidential. She's American, so she likely won't be able to offer any help on what the next step for you is but she will be able to spread the word about this company. Her website is: accrispin.blogspot.com
