Reading books, studying how too books, visiting websites, paying for feedback, studying, just plain hard slog writing and rewriting? What's the best way to be a better writer in your opinion?
I keep wondering if I should go on a course, can anyone recommend something suitable for a person who works full time?
Please don't say Arvon...I tried that and it wasn't for me, plus its soo expensive.
Writing every single day, you can find writing exercise all over the web or what I like to do is write stories whilst people watching.
Reading, for the sort of genre you wish to write for .
The site London MeetUp has plenty of events for writers were you can read and get feedback on your work.
Watching films is also great source of inspiration
Great question,
Voices can differ in so many different ways. I find the more I write the more I learn. Reading has also helped me out. I have never considered a writing course as I do this just for fun but I would imagine I would learn a lot more if I took up such of course.
Hi Sarah, I don't know if you have ever heard some of the things Roald Dahl's sisters said to him, but had he listened we would never have had charlie and the chocolate factory and all the other weird and wonderful stories he wrote. They told him straight he was rubbish and to stop wasting his time, he didn't he just carried on writing and learning. I think you are a writer; if you are a writer, and it's practice, yep some help now and again, the sort of help when you have written in YOUR style and its developing and so is the skill, find a writers group near you and share your work live with them, if they are good they will be honest, they won't put you off but maybe point you where you need to look yourself to make your work, work... I am not an expert nore am I a published writer but I feel that seeing the words talk back is when you know you have started to get it right, if your story doesn't talk to you it won't talk to anyone else. Whatever you do DON'T give up get to know other writers near you usually the library. if you already know all this just please ignore me I'm old! Regards and all the best with your writing. Paul.
