Best Tips for Submitting to Professional Book Publishers

Hi everyone,
I’m in the process of preparing my manuscript and looking to submit it to professional book publishers, but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. I know a lot of the process is about the submission, and I want to make sure I’m doing everything right. What are the best tips for crafting a standout query letter or book proposal?
Also, any advice on how to approach professional book publishers that specialize in my genre? I want to make sure my manuscript gets into the right hands. If you've had success with publishers, what strategies or tips helped you get noticed?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi Harry!
Sounds like you're at an exciting step, but I absolutely appreciate how overwhelming the whole process can be!

We have lots of free advice articles on the submission process and I've included the most relevant ones for you here:

It's worth getting a copy or asking your local library to order one in for you as it contains everything you need to know about submitting to agents.

In terms of publishers, most major publishers will not accept unsolicited submissions (they'll need to come through an agent) but there are plenty of incredible indie presses where you can submit directly.

The Indie Press network has a great directory of smaller independent presses, so these could be presses you approach: https://indiepressnetwork.com/presses/

The best thing you can do is to take your submissions seriously, which it sounds like you are doing. Take your time with your submissions and make sure you are targeted in your approach.

Wishing you all the best with it,
Clare
