While I have read a vast range of material and like foriegn films (saw a brilliant Peruvian one the other day) I think that we are so spoiled for choice here in the UK that we would rarely notice even other European writers. I suspect that the main way that any foriegn writer would come to our attention would be through film or, possibly, TV.
Then again, there are always odd items that, for one reason or another, leap out and grab everyone's attention.
As a general guide I would suggest that the more effective approach would be to write in your own first language and then get the material translated twice and independently by very good translators who can convey meaning rather than just words.

I hope this is helpful.
