Can anyone advise on authors who really play around with 'rules'?

Hey A yes house of leaves is good but it is also a challenge....footnotes! There is a definite feel of claustrophobia in the writing. Will look into your other suggestions, thank you!

All depends, really, on what rule you are breaking it, if you understand it,why and how you are breaking it. But then again it doesn't, because always that chance for accidental genius.

If you do it well your book will be picked up/sold.

Have at 'em rules with glee and chainsaws as long as you precision tools on the edit.

I've wanted to read House of Leaves for so long! Have read Only Revolutions. And I love Scarlett Tomas, read Our Tragic Universe-its quite hilarious reading the character discussing storyless stories and genre formula as you are reading yet another form. Sort of.

In classic literature it is the rule breakers who last.
