Can't get started

Hi, I'm new to writing and have an idea for a novel. The problem is I have started writing it three times, each with a different approach. I have now decided to research more before I start writing again. Can any of you provide tips on getting that first chapter finished please?

I basically started my novel with a short story which I thought would make a good ending but as I continued writing, I couldn't fit in that snippet anywhere, so I put it in as a dream.

Also, I skipped some chapters and wrote the end first. I don't know why but for me its easier to work the story backwards like Victoria said. Knowing the outcome first helps me to create better situations that lead to it.

So basically just jot down how the story comes to you and later sew it all together so that the pieces fit properly.

Hope it helps! :)

When I write a book I usually plunge right into it, like its a swimming pool, and I'm the diver who is the only one who is going to get deep enough to get what it's really about. Author Jack Gantos said that the way to get to know your characters is through dialogue. So I suggest that you start by getting to know your characters. After that everything is a bit easier. Hope this helped!

That's great Jonathan, thank you for that. I'll go away and work on that too.
