I may be way off the mark with the way I break for a chapter but it seems like natural punctuation, it "feels" as if that's where the chapter ends and the new one picks up. But that's me...
Different types of books have different chapter lengths - children's books, for instance, have shorter chapters for younger children. There may be a difference by genre - thrillers may have shorter chapters - particularly towards the end of the showdown. I think it's a good idea to look at some published works that are similar in genre to your own. Compare across a few authors and see what you find. I anticipate you'll discover that chapter word count in books for adults is typically a good deal longer than 1000. (But sounds about right for 7-9 year olds - so it really depends what you're writing.)
Great idea Kate because I forgot to say I am writing a novel so maybe the chapters will be longer, I will check it out.
Hi Paul this is all new to me but I think the same way too, so maybe I can combined both your answers.
Many thanks
