Hi,
this is my first post here so I would just like to say a big hello.
My question is with regard to the best practice for attracting a publisher.
I have devoured countless articles that offer differing opinions so I thought I would ask here for any first hand experience.
I am an amateur author and experienced illustrator. My art has its foundation in cartoon and is very much focused on character and expression.
I have self-published two children's picture books this year that have been well received. I've many stories planned to write for children aged from reception (4 / 5) to young adult, but this question relates to picture books for the younger child.
My stories are very much in the adventure style. I tend not to create stories that are pertinent to the trials of childhood. Brushing teeth, first day in school etc.
Some options based upon a range of articles:
1. present a completed and self-published book as an example of my ability
2. present a series of roughs that include text (jpg) to illustrate how I plan to create a storybook
3. present a portfolio of art to illustrate my style and a manuscript as a seperate document / file.
I am very conscious of offering myself as a 'brand'. From childhood I've had the nickname Wilf. I would very much like to present myself as Wilf the children's author and illustrator.
Is it worth approaching publishers as a potential brand?
Hugely grateful to any advice that can be offered.
Best wishes,
Mark
Hey Mark
Thank you for your post, which is interesting, to see how you're getting along and published 2 books so far.. I'm afraid you're way ahead of me..
I have not published a book and unsure whether it'll ever reach a stage, where it will become a book, good or bad...
That's why I felt a need to ask about how much I need to write.. I did answer someone about what size font and how many words etc, but not heard back yet..
My writing is non-fiction.
'Wilf', sounds catchy and good to remember though, from a personal view, but i've never yet approached any publisher myself yet.. I'll be bouncing ideas off a friend who has a friend, who's a publisher, but that's all when i've written more and if I decide to go ahead with it.. :) Sorry i'm not any help Mark.. I wish you good luck, and maybe we'll catch up in a few months to see how we're progressing.. :)
