I’ve recently completed my first book and submitted the full manuscript to several publishers.
To my excitement, three of them responded with offers of publishing contracts. However, my enthusiasm quickly faded when I discovered that each of them required upfront payments—whether in the form of initial fees or deposits.
While I’m truly grateful that they saw potential in my work, I’m not comfortable with the idea of paying to be published. I’ve always believed that if your writing is truly strong, it will eventually find a publisher who is willing to invest in it—no matter how long that may take.
Am I mistaken in my views on paying to be published?
