Counting words

We often see comments about word counts on here - but I think that making the words we use count is far more important...

Does anyone have any practical suggestions for ways that we can improve our writing and make the words that we put together more useful/effective?

thanks

The only advice I have ever been given on this subject was:

Read as much as you can, It doesn't matter what. Different genres, different types of literature – poetry, plays, fiction, non-fiction, the newspaper etc – as that will expose you to all kinds of different writing styles.

Listen to how people talk, different dialects. The 'Queens English' is not how the majority of people speak, for believable dialect your writing should reflect this.

And finally, keep writing. The more you write, the better you will become.

Hope that helps...
