Do I accept my first offer from a publisher?

Hi all,

Hoping someone can help. I sent my picture book, written & illustrated by myself to a few publishers and literary agents. Had a couple of rejection, not for content, but full client list from literary agents. Then got accepted by a very small publisher. However, do I take this first offer, with no experience of being published, or should I shop around & try and get represented by an agent to get the best deal? I don't want to miss a great opportunity, but would be gutted if I didn't get a decent deal. Hope you can help, many thanks, jo

You could check there are no bad opinions out there about the small publisher by typing their name into a search engine or by looking at a website such as 'writers beware'.

Even if they are not as big a publisher as you'd like, you won't be signing your whole life over to them, just one book out of many potential future books - and future books may be more likely to interest an agent / larger publisher once you've been published.

Congratulations on getting this far.
