Why kill off good characters when you can recycle them?

Yep, if they have to die they have to. If it's part of the story I can't change that :-) Makes me sad, I killed off a character a while ago and I liked him so much I mourned for several weeks, couldn't even go back and look at it for a while. But there was no other ending for him. Not sure what you mean by recycling characters - do you mean having them show up in other stories?
