I hope my novel will be the first in a series, that's if I ever finish editing it.
I've heard that agents look favourably on authors who intend to write more than one novel.

I'm on book 3 of a series, though originally I only ever intended to write one. I suppose I got quite fond of the characters, even the baddies, and thought it might be fun to see how far I could take them.
I'm lucky insofar as there's a natural (and factual) timeline I can follow, and though it's been done several times before those stories have a different focus so I think I'll get away with it. I've another eight in various stages from fairly detailed outline to vague idea, so there's plenty of writing to do yet :)
I'm guessing we all hope we have more than one novel in us - I like the idea of a recurring character. I also like it when an author comes up with something novel (no pun intended!). For example, Michael Moorcock and his character Jerry Cornelius who changes features through the four main books he is in, and Yukio Mishima's Sea of Fertility books where a recurring character is reborn/reincarnated in each book.
I would imagine agents (by the nature of their business) would look favourably on an author who can show they can continue to write on an ongoing basis. I expect the agent who signed Harper Lee on the strength of To Kill a Mocking Bird was a little miffed when Harper never wrote another novel!
I plan to write 5 books with my current protagonist. Funnily enough any story I think of seems geared towards a series.
