does it help to live in the country you want to publish

this might sound a bit odd but do you think you are at a disadvantage by living in a different country to the one you are trying to publishe in?

For instance I live in Africa, my novel is based in the UK, and I'm approaching UK agents. It was suggested to me that I am at a disadvantage because UK agents might not want authors who don't live in the UK.

Any thoughts or experience on this?

I understand your worry. I lived in Tenerife for two years and didn't feel as if I could approach publishers while I still lived there. I think it is an unfounded worry. They will want to meet you so you will have to make a trip at some point, but if you have the book they want, being in Africa won't make that much difference.

thank you :) I should have added that I am British so the story and settings are not the worry so much as not being in the UK when approaching agents. thanks again
