Editing your work?"

Hi Writers,

I am trying to gather some advise on the next step after you have finished the first draft of your novel and are about to jump into the editing stage. I'd like to know what methods other writers use to get through this and do they enjoy this part more than the first draft part?

Thanks guys

Hi Theodore. I can only speak for myself on the editing subject. I read aloud and edit as I go, (after the first draft is finished) it takes me ages but you get to know your work much better. You will find rewrites happening at the same time, maybe a whole section that needs to be either changed or discarded, the other side to that is you may find yourself writing in a whole new chapter, (maybe) it happens. the enjoyment I feel comes from seeing it cook! The flavours become sometimes stronger with the addition of seasoning and with each subtle infusion of creational juices it starts to become thicker, rather than the watery concoction we began with. Enough of this rubbish cooking analogy!!! It just comes down to time and effort, it really is an enjoyable task even after maybe the 6th edit I find it still something I look forward to, I think because each time it starts to look like "someone else must have written this not me" but you ask do we enjoy it more than the first draft part, again I can only speak for myself I enjoy it just as much, to me it is all a great experience. I gave up writing years ago because I thought, stupidly, that once it was written that was it I had no idea of editing or rewrites, I'm glad I came back to it 18 months ago with a whole different understanding. By the way all this doesn't mean I'm any good!

I hope you enjoy your next task, the editing.

Good luck and Regards Paul.

Hey!

I remember a question of the same ground being asked just a couple of days ago. Here's the link: https://www.writersandartists.co.uk/question/view/1826

I hope it helps. I'm still on the first draft and editing for me is like molding my dear thoughts, so basically I don't think I'll enjoy that part in the future more than the first draft part.

And hey, if you have completed your first draft, congratulations! It's time to keep the draft away for a week, celebrate and get back to with the Mr. Critique inside in you.

Regards
