Finding a UK agent when living abroad?

Hello!

I am beginning the process of pitching to agents in the UK. However! I recently moved to Germany. I see that some agent entries in the Writers and Artists Yearbook specifically mention that they are willing to represent writers from overseas - does this mean the ones that DON'T mention it would not be open to dealing with me? I am a UK national, FYI.

Cheers,

Kate

A friend was told by an agent that her work was good, but the fact that she lived in Tenerife meant that they wouldn't take her as she wouldn't be readily available for publicity purposes. Most publishers expect you to do your own publicity as a first timer, which may have been the problem. Hard to promote a book from a distance.

I would hope that the quality of your work would sell the book to them, unhindered by your location. If in doubt, ask first.

I have seen one agent's webpage which said that she needed to see her clients, so that she wasn't accepting ones from overseas. There might also be some racist agents (why not?) who use this as an excuse.

If they say nothing, I don't think that you should assume the worst. Maybe they think that it goes without saying that they'd consider ANY clients.

Some agents write "no reading fee", but that's the general rule, not the exception.
