Just finished my first draft after 3 years and 2 months. The first chapter was 2 years in the making and very stop start.
My biggest challenge has been grammar. It has never been my greatest strength but i'm working on it and improving all the time.
Now time for some serious editing editing and more editing.
How long did your first draft take?
What was your biggest challenge?
Congrats on completing your first draft!
I've been tinkering away at mine for five bloody years now. Though admittedly the first few were builng world, exploring plot and characters, themes ect and improving my craft. I'd say the last year and half has seen me become more focused, viewing my writing as a career rather than hobby.
And the ole government advised me to become self employed in the autumn so that's proven to be a good goad in ensuring that I'm working toward my goals everyday.
Don’t worry about how long it is taking you to complete first draft, or second…
What is important is why.
As Lucy pointed out, if you are excited and inspired by your work, you will pump the words out. You will not want to stop for anything or anyone. And regardless of work, or social commitments, you will find the time.
If your writing does not hold your own attention, does not excite you, why would you expect it to interest anyone else?
Well done for getting this far, now step away for a few weeks, unload it from your head, then read it objectively.
Good luck!
Hi Ashwerya
My biggest challenge was grammar which has improved by attending various workshops ect. I find editing very challenging too, especially knowing when to stop. :)
