It sounds, from your question, that you already have an agent, in which case they should guide you through the whole process of selling your book, for example, with editing your novel so that it can be its very best and touting the MS, If this is the case, he expects to be able to sell your work through his contacts to a publisher who is willing to gamble that you and your work will prove to be marketable enough for it to be worth their while. He should not charge you for any of his services but will secure an advance from the lucky publisher for the rights to sell your books. A 2-book deal is probably the norm these days. You get to keep this money regardless of whether your work is published by the publisher or not, but your agent will deduct his specified fee, usually 10-15%. A reputable publisher does not charge you or your agent for services but make their money from book sales.
If you do not have an agent yet, you can find a list of them in the W&A yearbook (available on Amazon at a lower price). As I said on a previous reply, finding an agent is not easy, you need to tailor your submission package for your market, genre etc, and make sure they deal with the same type of material.
All this assumes you do not wish to self-publish, of which there are a few options, Amazon and Google to name two for electronic books, I believe they both take a percentage of the sale price. Vanity publishers will generally charge you for whatever they can.
Good luck Zohaib.
