How do you choose your characters for your novel?

Are your characters based on real life people, complete invention, or a mixture of both?

Are there particular books that have influenced your characters?

I think that main characters, those with depth, very often come from your surroundings, by appearance, behaviour etc. It makes it easier to 'colour them in'. I also notice there are many aspects of myself seeping into certain characters. I would be careful with looking at other books for your characters.

Good question.

I think ultimately, all my characters have facets of myself, as well as other people that I know/have met/seen.
