How do you know when a character is complete?

Some characters are already fully fledged by the time you write them, but others take more time to figure out.

Should you go ahead and write them, finding out along the way, or should you wait until you know everything before writing?

I think Cecelia Ahern would disagree with you Jonathan. I know I do. Given that so much of any character can be hidden, discoveries can still be made long after someone's passing. I find it especially true in the world of fiction.

I disagree. A dead character is complete because he can no longer develop.

Unless you write paranormal stuff ;)

I completely agree - I was just wondering if anyone had their characters down to the last detail because I always thought that would be too difficult and too clichéd.
