How Do You Structure a Multi-POV Novel Without Losing the Reader?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on a novel that includes multiple points of view, and I'm struggling a bit with how to structure it so that readers stay engaged and not confused.

Each POV character has a distinct storyline that eventually converges, but I’m not sure how often to switch between them or how to handle transitions smoothly. I’ve read novels that do this brilliantly — like The Night Circus or A Song of Ice and Fire — but when I try, it feels either too jumpy or too slow.

Some questions I’d love input on:

  • Do you alternate POVs by chapter or by scene?
  • How do you make sure each voice feels unique?
  • Have you ever written (or read) a story where one POV dragged the pace down?
  • Are there any techniques you use to keep timelines aligned and coherent?

Would really appreciate your thoughts or even examples from your own writing!
