Hi everyone, this question may have been asked before but I was just wondering if anyone knew how long to wait when an agent has your full manuscript before contacting them to follow up? An agent has had my book for just over two months - they said for me to wait until I hear from them and so I've been sitting on my hands trying not to email, but just wondering if I should send them a follow up message? It may be one of those 'how long is a piece of string' answers but just wondering if any of you have any thoughts or experience that might help me - thanks, Helen
It depends on the agent, their methods and workload. However, it is a painful experience waiting as most of know to our emotional cost. Some agents say a fixed response time and far exceed it. Others I am dismayed to share with you NEVER get back. This is neither fair or acceptable but you are at their mercy. Some authors send a self addressed postcard which is returned to at least let you know they received your submission. Some will bin the three chapters if not hooked. After a number of tries to find an agent you get to realise it is a lottery. But persevere. Your work is a matter of taste and you need to strike lucky to reach someone who loves your initial pages. If an agent messes you around do you really want them to work for you? The solution is to get going on your next book!
