Hi all. Just going to have a tiny rant because one or two things have begun to annoy me, They might seem silly to some but they really irritate me. To begin with when did 'Sixth' become 'Sikth?' We don't say one, two, three, four, five, sik do we? There is a definite 'X' in there. I've also read some comments on fb and in some stories I've read where 'drawer' has been spelled as 'draw' or 'draws' in the plural. No! It's drawers. Finally in writing at school we were told you never put a comma after the word 'and' or begin a sentence with it. I've seen this loads of time, has it become ok? Is it just me or does anyone else feel some things should be said or used in the right way? Rant over.
Sikth especially annoys me as well. I daresay it will become the norm since so many broadcasters say it that way, and will enter into the Oxford dictionary. Heaven forbid!
Hi Jonathan I have to admit my comma's also end up in the wrong places quite often. But I do wonder when the basic rules of writing changed almost anything is deemed to be acceptable now, or this is how it appears. (Is my comma in the right place?) Ha!
I, too, was always taught you should never start a sentence with a conjunction. But in modern prose shorter, choppy sentences often work well anywhere you're trying to ramp up the tension a bit.
And, in many cases, Oxford commas can help readability somewhat. Mind you, this is from one who was recently told he kept putting commas in the wrong place, so what do I know?
