Legal advice for self publishing

I want to self publish a poetry project I've been working on. I'm confident the work itself doesn't infringe any copyright, but need some advice about trademarks re: my proposed title... 50 Shades Of Poetry. Is there anywhere I can get free legal advice or resources? If I need to speak to a solicitor, is there anything I should look out for?

Hi Cassy, Like you I needed to find out if certain things are covered by copyright so I mailed the "IP" office here and in the U S A, they told me titles of, books, films songs and historical people (that was the one I needed) don't need any permission as there is no copyright on these. Going off the title you intend to use there is a book out called "50 sheds of grey" it was on the shelves within weeks of the original and got publicity, quite a funny parody.

I think if anything, the original author of any title would be pleased that someone has used their idea as "inspiration" I know my first reaction if someone used mine would be... "I did it first"

I hope it does well for you and you enjoy every aspect of getting your work out there.

Hello Cassy,

When my book came out the publishers insisted on a title that was the same as a book already out there and selling well. The book happened to be by another author my agent represented. We both objected, but Hodder wanted the title and they were not going to budge and there was nothing anyone could do.
