I don't usually have much trouble with first names, but find surnames a real pain. Something that I find really helpful now is 'A Dictionary of English Surnames' - I just stumbled across mine in a second hand shop, but it's published by Oxford and I'm sure there are some to be found on Amazon :)
I just use my imagination. I don't find names a problem
