Hi, I was wondering what actually defines a novel. I've heard they can be short and that short stories can be long (if that makes sense) so what defines one from the other?

Replies

novels are always fiction. also, i have never heard of a short novel. i always thought they were long? any way, what i thought was the difference was novels are always fiction and long, short stories are mostly fiction and short. hope it helped

A novel is a story about 'people', I've always thought. That's it.

Out of interest I Googled Collins Dictionary (online) which says it's 'an extended work in prose, either fictitious or partly so, dealing with character, action, thought, etc, esp in the form of a story'

Who knew? ;)

There are novels which are short( like Lemony Snicket's, etc) and there are short stories which are long( Percy Jackson ones and Ranger's Apprentice ones etc), but I think the main difference is, the way they are written. The short stories which are not dealt in that much detail so ultimately I think its the way they are written.
