I always think a horror story benefits from avoiding too much overt description. Let the reader's mind do the work, because everyone is scared by different things. If you go into too much detail, you may find that it has the opposite effect than the one that you're hoping for. After building up suspense, some readers may be left disappointed if your monster or ghost isn't what they'd pictured
For me it has to be the horror of everyday life and ordinary people! My first love was Stephen King, and he is the master of writing about the terrors that reside in all of us. Most of his stories were about the manifestation of everyday folk's deepest fears.
Yeah, he wrote about vampires and bogeymen too, but I liked it best when he was just drilling a hole into people's heads!
