Hi all. Is it just me or does anyone else still print off pages of their ms? I do this as an indication of how far I've come and how much I've done since starting. I compare it to picking a novel up and reading it on paper against flicking on Kindle and reading it on a screen. For me to see my work in print, even by me, makes it feel real. Am I the odd one?
Thank you Eleanor and Lynden. It's good to get different views on a subject. As you said it's good for finding all the little mistakes and typos it does make it easier. I know it can be expensive mostly because of the ink as you said, but I like reading paper work. I have my ms on memory sticks but somehow it just isn't the same. Thanks again.
Printing off is a good way to see the ms with fresh eyes. I also find it helpful to leave a piece of work - say a finished story or a chapter - to lie fallow for a couple of days, then you can view it on the screen (or paper) as a dispassionate reader. If you feel brave, get someone else to read it and make suggestions/comments!
Hi Elsie, I have read that we read more carefully on a printed page than on a screen. Therefore while it is expensive, it will be good for picking up those sneaky typos as well as for getting the feel of the story. I personally am too mean to do this as print cartridges are so expensive! But I find it is almost as helpful to upload my ms onto my Kindle. At least that way I start to look at my story as a reader rather than the overfond, defensive author!
