Hi, i know someone has asked this question before but I'm confused:( If you share your work on here, is it classed as publishing? someone said yes because its shared electronically and someone said no... can any one clarify as id like to share my short stories and my larger work in progress but don't want to ruin any chances of getting them into short story competitions..... thanks again..... kat ;)

What I understand by publishing is a document that can be catalogued in any library complete with ISBN or ISSN numbers as the case may be. This can either be in print form or online. Anything short of this, to me, may not be said to have been published. I stand to be corrected please. Thanks. -Baggy.

Useful article, Victoria, and shows why online critiquing is popular.

And the Bridport rule is interesting, too. Playing devil's advocate it looks like a 'frightener-off-er' to me, because it's totally unenforceable. What are they going to do - check every forum every entrant just might have posted on? Of course not. What they mean is work deliberately posted in the public domain - they just can't figure out how to word it.

In any case, an author wanting criticism is going to amend his or her work according to feedback suggestions - there's little point asking other's opinions if you don't act on them. And once you've edited your work...it's not the same piece you posted online.

I nearly quoted 'Publish and be damned!' there, but it's not quite the same thing ;)
