Short Story Submissions

Competitions and on-line magazines usually state that they do not accept anything already published in any form. I have some short stories that were previously printed in collections self-published by the writing group I used to belong to. My question is, if I alter each of those stories so that they aren't identical to the originals, would that then make them eligible to submit?

Just send them Susan, nobody's going to check,?

And what if they did - you perhaps won't win? Would you have won anyway when each comp has hundreds upon hundreds of entries?

Tweak them if it makes you happier but do just send them all.
