Social Media Use

Hi all,

Just a couple of questions regarding social media:

If articles you've written and submitted without pay appear in a publication i.e a football club's official programme, can you then put them on something like Facebook or would the club own your work?

If you're getting ready to submit to publishers, would posting say a chapter or so on a social media format be a good or bad idea?

Any input would be much appreciated by myself.

Check the terms and conditions under which you submitted, Dan. Some mags will say you can't use your work anywhere else, either permanently or within a certain timescale. They may say you own the copyright and can do what you like - but you msut check the details. By accepting their terms (which you did when you allowed your work to appear) you've signed a contract with them.

FB is a grey area; their terms state that anything that appears on their site is owned by them. Many authors circumvent this by putting links to their own sites or blogs, so it must be acceptable; but again, I'd check FB's terms and conditions before putting a whole chapter on there.
