I assume you are asking for personal opinions, and must assume further this is for some sort of survey as any answers will not direct you to writing a popular book which will sell. There is an old adage that writing, as with buying art, should be what makes you happy, not for commercial gain.
Myself? I do not like modern books. My favourite authors are John Deighton and John Steinbeck. Novels with a touch of history appeal to me. Romance doesn't.
