Story ending

How do you know when you have got to the ending of your story?

Replies

Hi Becky. If the story is to have an end, briefly, the way I do it is as follows:

Beginning - After setting the scene, I introduce The Problem/Challenge/Mystery/etc.

Middle (Muddle) - I introduce additional problems, conflicts, barriers etc, to a point where

the initial Problem/Challenge/Mystery seems insurmountable

(Crisis Point).

Ending - I need something or someone to Change, so that the Problem/Challenge can be

mastered or the Mystery can be solved. Then, I tidy up all the loose ends.

Hi Becky, it would appear that most of my fellow writers here have given you each a different view of how the end of your novel is reached. Sadly I have no better explanation to give you, but I have read books about writing a novel. And the majority seem to favor Jonathan's thought process. To write the ending first and work backwards. Or when starting out have some Idea of how you want your novel to end.

I personally use the film method for most of my writing, If you're unaware of this Its where you run your story section by section as short film clips in you're mind and see if they work. In creating this short clip you can, rewind, alter, re-shape, and adjust the images in your mind till you are happy. Then put the images down in text and in doing this you know how the story is played out right up to and including the end. I don't know if this will help in any way. But I suppose its down to your own choice. Good luck my friend.
