I have a question that I have been going over and I am ready to reach out to everyone to get their opinions. I live in the USA, but find that more agents in the UK find my work interesting, and so I have been submitting to agents based in the UK. Now, do you think that I should make it very clear to them that I am from the USA? The reason I ask this is because my partner made a comment about how the two countries writing styles are different. We use different words, construct our sentences different, and use a different tone in general. Does anyone think it makes a difference?
Brad, I have no experience of the field at all, so basically pay no attention to me... but I think there are some grammatical differences in accepted language use between UK and US English, and that might be relevant.
For example, you answered a question asked by Adrian about choice of words and you concluded that you had been 'using that word wrong the entire time'. Now, if you read that with an American accent, it sounds fine, but if you read it with a UK accent, it just sounds grammatically incorrect, because we would/should say 'wrongly' not 'wrong'. Maybe you would want an agent to be reading your submission with that American accent in their head so that they got the right idea? Having said that, when I read your response, i realised straight away that it was American English, so maybe it's obvious anyway?
I live in London, so I will submit to UK agents/agencies when I am ready to submit my manuscript. I intend to that for many other countries if it is necessary.
I have read that some USA agents/agencies do not accept submissions from the UK, because they have agents in the UK who act for them. But that would not deter me.
I do not know how submissions work from the USA to the UK.
I would advise that you check out agent or agencies websites to see if they accept submissions from other countries.
