Tenses driving me nuts.

Hi

I'm looking at the first line of my book and being driven nuts. The sentence says

Alex and I were speeding along our favourite road.

I want the sentence to be written in the present tense, so do I need to change were to are?

Alex and I are speeding along our favourite road.

It just doesn't feel right this way, maybe it is down to how I speak. What do you think?
