Hi
I have almost finished my first novel. I self published my first book (an autobiographical memoir) but I would love to submit my latest offering to some well known literary agents. I can't find a list of the best agents. Everything I have seen has very long lists and it is difficult to decide from those lists to whom I should submit my novel.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
John

¡Hola César!
If you've already published non-fiction pieces, you're in a more advantageous situation than most of the rest of us. Did you have an agent to get your first book and the articles placed? In that case, your best bet is to ask that agent for advice. Even if (s)he is no longer your agent, (s)he has made money off you in the past and should be willing to give advice.
If you didn't have an agent, you should look [for example in the WAYB listings, using the search options "agent" + "non-fiction" + "scientific"* (if that doesn't get you enough results, try leaving out "scientific" and search again)] for an agent who deals with your kind of book.
Or - if your original book was on a similar subject AND sold well, you could just approach the same publishers, and ask whether they're interested... or whether they could recommend another publisher.
* I have just used the search function with "agent" + "left-handed" and got ZERO results, so don't try THAT.
¡Suerte! (Mi hermano era zurdo y mis padres intentaron - con todo tipo de artimañas - convertirle a diestro ["curarle"].)
I am a retired, British-trained Spanish Surgeon, resident in the British Isles for about 15 years where I studied and worked in my speciality.Author of one non-fiction book and several scientific articles published in the international press, most of them in English. I have just completed a ms. on the subject of left-handedness: In about 53,000 words & 16 chapters, it studies the left-handers’ personality, their often creative talents, and how their gene has thrived over the ages, even though minority traits tend to disappear through natural selection. They form between 10 & 12% of the human population, as are most of the genious that exist or have existed, & the majority of the US presidents since Mr. Harry S.Truman to the present one Mr. Obama. Its intended audience, other than the Left-Handed. and their relatives, is very large: There are about 125 to 150 million left-handers in the English-speaking world. Books such as this should be made available at school and college libraries, and at bookstores for the inquisitive readers.
I should like to submit this ms. to a literary agent with view to publication in the UK and perhaps abroad. I should be grateful for your kind advice. I am preparing a text in American English. Many thanks and kind regards.
