Twitter - is it worth the effort?

Does anyone out there use Twitter as a tool for promoting a book?

I'm interested in the impact of Social Media generally. Personally I rely on blogging related subjects and the odd mention on my personal Facebook page - anywhere I can get in a plug without it being too obvious or tiresome for potential readers. I don't have 'author' or 'book' pages as such.

And that's the problem. One simply can't bombard potential readers with 'BUY MY BOOK!' or everyone gets sick of it. I know I do, when other writers try the same.

So - how do you attract readers or followers without sounding like the literary version of an X-Factor contestant?

Hi Jonathan,

I must admit I did use Twitter to promote my book when it first came out and gained a lot of followers who were interested in Autistic Spectrum Conditions (the book is about one such condition and is non fiction) but I can't honestly say whether it sold any of my books. I also did several blog posts for the publishers site which may have helped. As my book is of a more specialised subject, it hasn't sold that many copies (about 1000 in a year and a half I think). I wrote regular tweets promoting the book but have to say I found the whole thing time consuming and deleted the account some months ago. However, the book continues to sell as well it was doing. Not sure that helps your enquiry tho ;-)
