US Agent

Hi Everyone,

I'll soon have a ready-to-go manuscript and I need to make an important decision whether to send it to a US agent (I'm based in the UK).

Why United States? I found an agent that is perfect for the type of book I wrote and she happens to be based in NYC.

Of course, it would be easier if I had let's say a London based agent, you know in terms of meetings, contact and all.... But I feel strongly about this particular US agent. I have powerful gut feeling that doesn't go away.

It's a bit overwhelming and challenging.

My question is, did you ever go down the route of having a US agent and publishing ( fingers crossed! :) in the USA?

Could you please give me any valuable information on how this works contract wise ect..... Anything would be really helpful as I need to make a decision soon.

Many thanks!!

Dear Lorraine, thank you for taking the time to respond and expressing your opinion.

I'll take it all into account and keep working on preparing my submission, let's see what's in store :) - take care.

Isa, you are a long way from getting a contract with this agent. Why not send off your work as they require it; read their conditions carefully and in particular check whether they accept from outside the US.. You may be rejected, and so the question becomes moot; but if they are interested, study the contract closely, with legal help if necessary. It may be that you are able to look for an English agent in tandem, or they may assume worldwide control. You would need to pay attention to US tax rules in particular.

You can't make an informed decision without all the information, and you won't get that without contacting the agent.
