Use of names of companies, like Facebook and Starbucks in fiction.

Does anyone know the law surrounding the use of corporate names like Facebook, NatWest and Starbucks, for example, in a work of fiction? Are you allowed??

I think I'll play safe and make some up that sound similar, like SatBest, Flloyds, Nationpride and Startnuts.

Companies own their names as brands; therefore be very careful how you use them.
