Vanity Publishers - Is this true?

Hi Everyone,

I have recently completed my first children's book and am thrilled about sharing it with the world.

I've received offers from both Pegasus Publishers and Austin Macauley Publishers, and I'm currently evaluating their proposals. The proposed investment, approximately 2600 euros, including illustrations for my book, seems reasonable, especially considering the costs I would incur if I were to pursue self-publishing and hire an illustrator independently, which would likely double this amount.

However, despite these promising offers, I have encountered concerning reviews about both publishers during my extensive online research. This has understandably left me feeling uncertain and discouraged.

Has anyone had a positive experience with either publisher?

I would greatly appreciate any insights or advice on how to navigate this situation and effectively bring my work to the public while ensuring a fair and reputable partnership.

Hi Krystal - It's certainly exciting to receive offers like this. I was in the same boat a couple of years ago and ended up accepting an offer from Pegasus. Long story short, they didn't provide any support post-publishing, and little support during the publication process (no editing, no design). If you are willing to do the hard work of marketing etc yourself, then go for it. I did try to do this myself, but when I mentioned to bookstores who the publisher was, and where to purchase, they went cold very quickly. I was very disappointed in the little assistance they provided. I should have done more homework before agreeing. I think this could still be a good option so long as you enter with your eyes wide open, otherwise it can lead to disappointment. Good luck with your book!
