I've entered quite a few competitions over the years and excluding my school ones I never seem to get anywhere. Most I find also charge to enter :/ should I just give up entering? Are they a waste of time? Or should I percivere?

Why on earth should anyone pay to enter a competition????
Promoters put on competitions to cretae awareness of their activities in the marketplace. They will offset their costs against revenue...
That is - unless their business is entirely one of running competitions... in which case their interest is in - running competitions - not in writing - good, bad or indifferent.
What do you get from enetering a competition?
Is it a chance of winning it? Or not winning it? There's a much more useful bet on the lottery - there is at least some chance of getting a useful return.
Do these competitions that you pay for give you anything else back? Like a good revue of your entry? Anything educational? What do you get out of the money you spend?
Enter competitions by all means - but why line someone else's pocket for the "privelage"?
:-)
Keep trying. I never use to enter such competitions but now i have my eye on a few which hopefully will help me bloom in my writing!
I would never pay to enter... don't give up
