Jule Styne, a famous songwriter said, ‘Inspiration is for amateurs’. Words that word probably cause uproar in a creative writing class. What he meant was that inspiration alone is useless if you do not know your craft.
I believe that knowing your craft prevents writers block. I strongly believe that the major cause of writers block is due to lack of planning, not a lack of creativity.
@Gordon
How about "All work and no play makes Jack (or Jill) a dull boy (or girl)"?
Variety is what makes life interesting. Interest is what spurs a writer to be creative.
I think writers block is the same as somebody in a different line of work needing a break from what ever it is they do. I don't think its down to been drained of inspiration but the need to take a break. That old saying have a break have a kitkat springs to mind, no sorry I mean a break is as good as a rest or something on those lines. I think personally writers block is your brains way of say have a rest. Why do we feel pressured to try get things done by a certain time frame. Rome wasn't built in a day so we are told. So why try write a book at the speed of light. I was told the brain is like a sponge, it soaks up information. But every so often you need to have a rest.
And... The craftiest writers suffer from writer's block - sometimes for years...
Perhaps they should stop planning and just be creative?
