What does it take to be a writer?

We can facilitate the process through reading literature and taking creative writing courses.

How important is creative ability?

I believe the best authors have, Compassion.

I agree that discipline and hard work are vital tools for getting the job done, but without talent or a good story, they remain just that - tools, perspiration. That 1% inspiration is the key to it all :)

I wonder if focusing too much on a specific audience is a bit limiting.

What's that old adage again?

"Don't give people what they want. Give people what they don't know they want."

Experience. Knowledge of market. Appreciation of where you are and where you want to be. Travel lots. Think beyond your own town/city. Want others in far off places to read your work willingly. i.e. don't have every character from same ethnic background, as few places nowadays are like that. BELIEVE in your audience. If you want them to believe in your writing.
