I'm writing a book and I want to know what you think the most important thing to have is. What is it that grabs you and makes you want to keep reading?

Conflict. Absolutely essential in any novel. If your character is having a lovely day with nothing going wrong, your reader is having the opposite.

As everyone has said, I have to care about the characters first & foremost. Also the writing has to flow smoothly and paint a visual picture in my mind. I can't stand over wordy, leaden writing.
